ADX Oscillator: Indicating Trend Strength
"ADX (Average Directional Index) is a non-directional indicator, rather it measures the strength of the trend. It does not tell us if the trend is up or down, in fact just tells us how strong the current trend is." 

  • It is plotted as a single line which ranges between 0 and 100. 
  • ADX value crossing above 20, means that trend is getting stronger
  • ADX crossing below 20 signifies end of trend 
  • ADX between 0 to 20 refers to a non trending zone

TIP: ADX yields better results with more volatile stocks
        
ADX is supplemented with two Directional Indexes, +DI (green line) and -DI (red line). Though ADX line is non-directional, +DI and -DI lines indicate the direction of the trend and their interpretation is as follows:
  1. When +DI is above -DI, trend is upwards
  2. When -DI is above +DI trend is downwards
  3. +DI crossing over -DI signals bullish trend and vice versa
 
Things to learn about ADX
  1. ADX is based on Moving Averages. Therefore it is slow to react or in other words it is lagging indicator.
  2. ADX may not provide signals for slow moving stocks.
  3. Crossover of +DI and -DI some times can happen too frequently, thereby giving false signals.
 
Guidelines to trade using ADX
 
BUY Signal Rules
  1. When +DI crosses -DI and moves above it in upward direction
  2. The crossing angle is almost 45 degrees or more
  3. ADX line is above 20 value
 
SELL Signal Rules
  1. When +DI crosses -DI and moves below it in downward direction
  2. The crossing angle is almost 45 degrees or more
  3. The ADX is above 20.
 
EXIT SIGNAL
 1) When ADX falls below 20, indicating trend is loosing its strength.  
 
 ADX Signals on Gold Chart
 
  • In the above Gold hourly chart, Buy & Sell signals have been shown. 
  • Starting from left side, at first point, we can see that -DI (red line) crosses +DI (green line) with more than 45 degree angle and the ADX line is above 20, hence a sell signal is generated here. As observed in the chart the prices fall from this selling point give a profitable trade.
  • At the second point, +DI crosses -DI with an angle of almost 45 degree and ADX is above 20 level. A Buy signal is generated here.
  • At the third and the last point, again -DI crosses +DI generating a strong Sell signal.
 
TIP - ADX above 60 is a very rare scenario and is not sustainable. Traders should be ready for trend reversals at or above this point.

“एडीएक्स (एवरेज डायरेक्शनल इन्डेक्स) एक नॉन-डायरेक्शनल इंडिकेटर है, जो ट्रेंड की मजबूती को मापता है। यह नहीं बताता की ट्रेंड ऊपर है या नीचे है, बल्कि यह बताता है कि वर्तमान ट्रेंड कितना मजबूत है।”

  • इसे एक लाइन के रूप में प्लॉट किया जाता है जो  0 और 100 के बीच की रेंज में ऊपर-निचे घूमती है।
  • एडीएक्स की वैल्यू 20 से ऊपर पार करने का मतलब है कि, ट्रेंड मजबूत हो रही है। 
  • एडीएक्स का 20 से नीचे जाना, ट्रेंड के अंत का प्रतीक है।
  • 0 से 20 के बीच में एडीएक्स का होना, ट्रेंड के अनुपस्थित को दर्शाता है।

टिप: एडीएक्स ज़्यादा वोलेटाइल शेयरों के साथ बेहतर परिणाम देता है।
 
एडीएक्स दो डायरेक्शनल इन्डेक्सेस, +DI (हरी रेखा) और -DI (लाल रेखा) के साथ प्लॉट किया जाता है। ये ट्रेंड की दिशा का संकेत देते हैं और इनका व्याख्यान निम्नानुसार है:
  1. जब +DI -DI के ऊपर हो, तो यह तेजी का संकेत है।
  2. जब -DI +DI के ऊपर हो, तो यह मंडी का संकेत है।

एडीएक्स के बारे में ध्यान देने वाली बातें

  1. एडीएक्स मूविंग एवरेज पर आधारित है। इसलिए यह प्रतिक्रिया करने में धीमा है।
  2. एडीएक्स अधिक वोलेटाइल स्टॉक्स के लिए बेहतर काम करता  है।
  3. +DI और -DI के क्रॉसओवर अगर बहुत जल्दी-जल्दी होता है, तो यें गलत संकेत भी दे सकते हैं, इससे सतर्क रहे।

एडीएक्स का उपयोग कैसे करें

खरीदी संकेत
  1. जब +DI -DI को क्रॉस करके, ऊपर की और जाता है।
  2. क्रॉसिंग कोण लगभग 45 डिग्री है।
  3. एडीएक्स की वैल्यू 20 से ऊपर है।
 
विक्रय संकेत
  1. जब +DI -DI को क्रॉस करके, निचे की दिशा में जाता है।
  2. क्रॉसिंग कोण लगभग 45 डिग्री है।
  3. एडीएक्स की वैल्यू 20 से ऊपर है।
 
ट्रेड से निकास 
  1. जब एडीएक्स 20 से नीचे गिरता है।
 
  • उपर गोल्ड के एक घंटे के चार्ट में, बेचने और खरीदने के संकेत दिखाए गए हैं।
  • बाएं से दाहिने की ओर बढ़ते हुए, पहले बिंदु पर हम यह देखते हैं कि -DI (लाल रेखा) 45 डिग्री से अधिक कोण के साथ +DI (हरे रंग की रेखा) को पार करती है और ADX लाइन 20 से ऊपर है। अतः यहाँ बिक्री करने की स्थिति बनती है। नतीजा एक बड़े गिरावट के रूप में देख सकते हैं।
  • दूसरे बिंदु पर, +DI लगभग 45 डिग्री के कोण के साथ -DI को पार करती है और एडीएक्स 20 के स्तर से ऊपर है। हमें यहाँ एक खरीदी करने का मौका मिलता है।
  • तीसरे और आखिरी बिंदु पर, 45 डिग्री से अधिक कोण के साथ फिर से -DI +DI को पार करती है और एडीएक्स वैल्यू भी 20 से अधिक है, यहाँ फिर से बिक्री का एक शानदार मौका मिलता है।
 
टिप: जब एडीएक्स की वैल्यू 60 से अधिक हो जाती है, तो यह एक बहुत दुर्लभ परिदृश्य है जो टिकता नहीं है। व्यापारियों को ट्रेंड रिवर्सल के लिए तैयार हो जाना चाहिए।
